AMSTERDAM: The Sultanate stood third at the Arab level in Kids Rights Index 2017 which was published by the International Children’s Rights Foundation “KidsRights” and Erasmus University Rotterdam,the Netherlands. The Sultanate, which scored 0.822 points, was ranked 23rd on the world level in the index, which covers 165 countries. The international ranking depends on five criteria including child rights for life, health, education, protection and child-friendly environment.
The ‘child right to live’ monitors the rate of below 5-year-old mortality rate among children and mother’s mortality rate.
The ‘child right for health’ monitors the rate of below 5-year-old children suffering from underweight, universality of child vaccination at the age of five, the rate of population using sanitary drainage utilities and the rate of users of potable water from improved sources.
The ‘child right for education’ monitors child enrolling rate at primary and secondary schools and the rate of completion of study till the last years.
The ‘child right for protection’ observes the rate of child labour and the rate of child registration.
The ‘child right for child-friendly environment’ monitors the cooperation among institutions of the state and civil society organisations in the field of child rights and the respect level for the child views, as well as non discrimination among them. Portugal topped the list followed by Switzerland, Iceland, Spain, France and Sweden. Central Africa, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Venezuela and Chad came at the bottom of the list. — ONA
