MUSCAT: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Affairs (MECA), along with other countries observed the International Day for the Preservation of Ozone Layer, which falls on September 16 every year. The special event themed ‘Caring for all Life under the Sun’ was held at the main hall of the ministry’s building in Al Khuwair. In coincidence with the celebration, the 2nd edition of the initiative entitled ‘Ozone Umbrella Protects the Future of our Children’ was also launched under the auspices of the Adviser of Ministry of Education in the presence of under-secretary of MECA, experts from United Nation (UN) and officials and staff at the ministry.

The DG of Climate Affairs highlights the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer that was ratified in 1985 following the observation of ozone depletion. The Sultanate joined the treaty as per the Royal Directives and welcomed the agreement reached by more than 150 countries on reducing the usage of Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). The government has been working since 2001 on several preventive programmes and procedures to reduce and eventually halt the use of ozone-depleting substances.
