ROME: After picking himself up from a crushing referendum defeat that led to his ouster as Italy’s prime minister, Matteo Renzi said in an interview on Sunday that he is working on his political comeback. Renzi placed his own political future on the line in an unsuccessful campaign to push through constitutional reforms. Sixty per cent of voters opposed the changes in the December referendum, prompting his resignation. The Democratic Party leader had questioned whether he should return to politics at all in the days following the vote, he told the La Repubblica daily. “But then you find the will again and get back on the move,” Renzi said. Renzi said he would now work to strengthen his social-democrats ahead of elections expected before the end of the legislative period in 2018. Meanwhile, former premier and conservative media baron Silvio Berlusconi demanded snap polls in an interview with Corriere Della Sera and pledged to stand for election. — DPA
