Progress on women’s empowerment reviewed

MUSCAT: The follow-up committee for the implementation of the Convection on Elimination of Discrimination Against Woman (CEDAW) on Monday held a meeting under the chairmanship of Shaikh Mohammed bin Said al Kalbani, Minister of Social Development. The meeting discussed the implementation of CEDAW and reviewed the progress made in implementing the recommendations of the third meeting in 2016 which included following up the temporary measures, such as quota in ensuring representation of woman in elected councils, media coverage for Better World book and the participation of the Sultanate in preparing a report about woman in this book.


The meeting also discussed activating the role of Omani Woman Associations in empowering women and supporting their nomination for elected councils. It also discussed amending the explanatory note on woman indicators in the international systems as per the observations made. To this end, a recommendation on social gender merger has been added to all data, as well as inclusion of some statistical data. The meeting also discussed a vision about the quota election system, as well as some issues related to negative practices against woman and the measures taken in this regard. — ONA
