The Ministry of Manpower on Tuesday announced a decision regulating part-time work based on recommendations made by Tanfeedh’s labour labs.

The labs had said “flexible part-time and temporary employment policies were a necessity” in order to meet the demand for manpower in the country.

According to the ministry, Omanis employed for part-time jobs can work for not less than four hours a day and not more than 25 hours a week.

The minimum wage should be RO 3 per hour, and the employee should be at least 15 years of age. Working hours should be between 6 am and 6 pm.

While 20 per cent of part-time workers should be Omanis, exception has been made for SMEs, where the director is an Omani and partners are full-time employees.

Insurance cover should be provided to the workers and the employment contract should “specify the number of daily and weekly work hours for an agreed wage”.

As per the decision, both the employer and the employee should be allowed to terminate the contract through a written notification seven days in advance.

Tanfeedh labs had suggested that the Ministry of Higher Education is to raise awareness about taking up part-time work. Tanfeedh had set a target of 29,500 part-time workers by 2020, from 26,000 in 2017.
