The bilateral relations between Oman and Nepal are expected to get a further fillip as the latter is keen on signing more MoUs (memorandums of agreement) in several areas, including tourism, economic, cultural, technological, scientific and educational sectors.

Speaking to the Observer in an interview, Sher Bahadur Deuba, Prime Minister of Nepal, said both countries have several commonalities.

One such commonality is the high, rocky mountains, a major USP for tourism.

“We have signed a BCM (Bilateral Consultation Mechanism) with the Sultanate to facilitate more diplomatic and political relations. Two more agreements are in the pipeline,” said the Nepali prime minister, who visited Oman last week.

Oman and Nepal are this year marking the 40th year of establishing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He said the agreement for visa waiver for officials and diplomats of both countries as well as other areas and for promoting tourism, customs, and manpower have been viewed with great importance.

“We are keen to work closely with the Sultanate and efforts to waive visa requirements for diplomats and other officials are currently under way,” he said.

The BCM, signed by Shaikh Hilal Marhoon al Maamari, Head of West Asia Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Sarmila Parajuli Dhakal, Ambassador of Nepal to the Sultanate, envisages increased cooperation in the fields of economic, technological and scientific relations.

It stipulates annual bilateral meetings alternatively in Muscat and Kathmandu.
