The Omani Authority for Partnership for Development (OAPFD has signed an agreement with Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) to establish and deliver the Academic Foundation programme for the new Oman Aviation Academy project.


The academy, which is planned to be launched by the third quarter of 2017 at Sohar Airport, will play a role in the diversification of the national economy and the development of the local aviation industry by attracting foreign pilot trainees to eventually graduate as pilots with an international accredited pilot certification.


Additionally, the Academy will provide operational requirements in Sohar airport, which will contribute to increasing the air traffic and attract the regional and global airlines through Sohar Airport.


The Oman Aviation Academy will be the first professional aviation training organisation in Oman for ab-initio pilot training. The project will be developed in partnership with Airbus Helicopters and CAE-Oxford Aviation Academy (one of the top pilot training organisations in the world).


The aim of the project is to train the national and regional cadets to receive the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL). This qualification will enable the graduated students to work in any local and international airlines. In addition to the that, The academy will provide special training programmes for military pilot training.


The agreement was signed by Dr Dhafir Awad al Shanfari, Chief Executive Officer of OAPFD and Dr Ali Huashil al Shaily, Vice-President for Administrative and Financial Affairs of Sultan Qaboos University.


The ceremony was attended by Prof Amer Ali al Rawas, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Community Service, Dr Badria Ibrahim al Shehi, Director of the Centre for Preparatory Studies, and Captain Abdullah Murad al Bulushi, Project Manager of Oman Aviation Academy.


Commenting of the event, Dr Dhafir Awadh al Shanfari stated: “This educational programme is the initial stage of the establishment of Oman Aviation Academy (OAA). The academy will contribute in national economy development through the knowledge and technology transfer and enhancing the educational sectors in Oman. The academy will be one of best in the region that provide the aviation training to local and regional students.”


Prof Amer Ali al Rawas, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Community Service stated: “This programme comes within the university’s interest to contribute to the development process of the Sultanate and articulates its role as a house of experience for community service of preparing the Omani youth to take their role in development of the country.”


He added, “The university provided a constituent educational programme for one year; it contains three semesters and offers English for Aviation, Basic Physics and Mathematics courses for those who are enrolled in the Oman Aviation Academy in order to qualify them to study their academic programme.”
