Oman at Arab Ministerial Electricity Council

CAIRO: The Sultanate participated in the twelfth session of the Arab Ministerial Electricity Council which began on Thursday at the headquarters of the Arab League.


Mohammed bin Abdullah al Mahrouqi, Chairman of the Public Authority for Electricity and Water, headed the Sultanate’s delegation.


Dr Kamal Hassan Ali, Assistant Secretary General, Head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the Arab League, said that the agenda of the session includes several items, including the developments of Arab electricity interconnection projects, the Arab Joint Electricity Market and activating mechanisms of cooperation with the World Bank to crystallise the executive plan for the establishment of the joint Arab Electricity Market, in addition to renewable energy, energy efficiency and the most important of which is the Arab strategy for sustainable energy.


The opening session was followed by a ceremony to sign the memorandum of understanding for the establishment of an Arab joint Electricity Market, which was approved by the Council of the Arab League under resolution 8088 of September 8, 2016 issued by the 146th session of the Council of the Arab League.


The Arab Union of Electricity, the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the World Bank will participate in the meetings as observers, as well as a number of joint Arab labour institutions such as the Arab Atomic Energy Organization and the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC). — ONA
