No cases of cholera reported in Oman

While advising people not to be misguided by rumours, the Ministry of Health on Wednesday reiterated that the Sultanate is free of cholera.

A statement from the ministry said: “The health machinery is fully equipped with all facilities in case of an outbreak of the disease. The ministry confirms that Oman is free from cholera with no cases being reported from anywhere in the country.”

The ministry posted the statement online following rumours that cholera was likely to spread to the

country from the neighbouring Yemen, where the epidemic has surpassed 300,000 suspected cases.

While urging citizens and residents to ensure they follow strict hygiene guidelines issued by the ministry, the statement said, “The ministry is taking precautionary measures to treat if anyone is found to be affected with the disease. Also the ministry is equipping all its health centres with preventive medicine facilities.”

According to the ministry statement, the disease does not spread from one person to another except through polluted food and water.

“Citizens and residents should be careful in following correct hygiene procedures like washing hands before and after eating,” it said.

Cholera remains a global threat to public health and is an indicator of inequity and lack of social development.
