By Amal Al Riyami — NIZWA: May 17 - Nizwa Hospital has won the third place for patient safety in the Middle East. The hospital was evaluated by World Health Organisation (WHO) as part of its patient safety friendly hospital initiative (PSFHI). Nizwa Hospital is the first government hospital in the Middle East to win this honour. “This is a first step in our strategic plan in the next two or three years. The hospital will continue to raise its performance to reach the top level in patient safety,” said Dr Khalifa bin Hamad al Shaqsi, Director, Nizwa Hospital.

Hospitals are evaluated under five domains under PSFHI: leadership and management, patients and public involvement, safe evidence-based practice, safe environment and lifelong learning. Each of these domains has core, critical and development standards reaching 280 standards in total. The evaluation was conducted by WHO experts and the Directorate General of Quality Assurance Center at Ministry of Health (MoH), during which assessors reviewed documents of policies, conducted observational rounds in hospital and interviewed different levels of staff. They were impressed with the organisational structure, working environment and the high quality of patient care.
