By Fahad Al Ghadani — MUSCAT: Feb. 6 - The work on the new Muttrah fish market is nearing completion and will open in March, said a member of the Muscat Municipal Council. “Yes, the opening will be next month (March),” Hamad al Wahaibi, a Municipal Council member representing Muttrah, told the Observer. He said the council held a meeting on Monday, in which updates of the project were presented. “The meeting addressed the readiness of the project along with the facilities provided by the new market,” he said.

The market, with concrete structural walls, and aluminium and steel canopy, will have zones for fish processing and sales, a vegetable market, meat market, cafe and a restaurant. It will also have facilities for fish landing, refrigeration, preparation and packaging. Fish-selling platforms will have an ‘embedded extra-low temperature chilled water system’ for storage as a majority of internal spaces are ‘moderately’ temperature-controlled. It aims to woo more tourists, providing a unique visitor experience, while maintaining the functionalities required by fishermen and fish processors.

The old market, which has served both Omani and expatriate population for nearly three decades, was moved to the present location four years ago.

The new market will have a commercial zone. The 1,410-square metre market on the ground can accommodate 120 vendors and have a designated area for cutting fish. The first floor will be earmarked for the market, while the second floor will have a seafood restaurant, sources said.
