By Staff Reporter — MUSCAT:  Dec. 11: The Ministry of Manpower will start implementing a notification system for absconding employees from tomorrow. As per a statement the system has been mandatory in Muscat from January 2017, to be followed by other governorates before February. The system is part of the e-government services, aimed at simplifying and services offered to the general public. Under this new system, employers can submit notifications about absconding labourers and pay the value of the ticket electronically. They may also cancel the notification, redeem the value of the ticket and trace the progress of their application.

The service will also enable expatriates to receive SMS and email when the employer files absconding application.

They may also inquiries about absconding notifications filed against them, review the details of the notification and submit their grievances.

Meanwhile, the standing committee of the Ministry of Manpower had recently discussed issues related to the migrant workers who run away from their employers.

The meeting had sought to modernise the system of renewing labour cards for expatriate workers, which will have more accurate data on the employment market.

In recent years, there have been demands for measures to combat the problem of runaway workers because of its adverse impact on the overall labour market.

The suggestions include studying the circumstances that may lead an employer to run away from his work and stiffer penalties under the labour laws.
