Net electricity production grows 8 per cent till July end

The Sultanate’s net electricity production in the January-July 2017 period registered a growth of 8 per cent year-on-year reaching 20,901.2 GW/H from 19,349.5 GW/H over the same period of 2016, according to the data released by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI). Net electricity produced during July 2017 stood at 3,873.2 GW/H.


Significantly, the highest growth in electricity generation was reported from the Governorate of Al Wusta, which increased its net power production by 72.5 per cent with output reaching 296.2 GW/H at the end of July from 171.7 GW/H during the same period of 2016.


The Governorates of North and South Al Sharqiyah came second with an increased net power production of 44.9 per cent with output reaching 4,721.4 GW/H during the January-July period from 3,258 GW/H a year ago.


Meanwhile, Muscat and Al Dakhiliyah remained the only governorates to record a fall in net electricity production during the period, according to the NCSI data.


Muscat posted a 23-per cent drop in net electricity production during the period, which slumped to 2,061.8 GW/H compared with an output of 2,676.8 during the same period last year.


The Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah recorded a 20-per cent decline in net electricity production, which declined to 596.6 GW/H until the end of July this year from 745.4 GW/H until the end of July 2016.


Electricity production in the Governorate of Musandam increased by 6.2 per cent to 206.2 GW/H at the end of July this year from 194.2 GW/H during the same period in 2016.


Electricity production in the Governorates of North and South Al Batinah and Al Dhahirah together registered a 5.9-per cent growth to 10,979.6 GW/H at the end of July this year from 10,367 GW/H during the same period last year.


Electricity production in the Governorate Dhofar increased by 5.3 per cent to 2,039.5 GW/H until the end of July 2017 from 1,936.4 GW/H during the corresponding period of 2016.


The net figures are inclusive of purchases by Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP) and the Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAEC) from local power generating entities, as well as output from auto-generators and diesel rental units.


The Sultanate’s gross electricity production during the first seven months of this year witnessed an increase of 8.1 per cent to touch 21,205.1 GW/H compared with 19,623.3 GW/H achieved during the same period of 2016.


Meanwhile, the Sultanate’s total water production at the end of June 2017 increased by 6.2 per cent to 194,611,500 cubic metres compared with 183,229,200 cubic metres during the same period of 2016.


The Governorate of Dhofar raised its water production by 11.4 per cent to 26,000,900 cubic metres at the end of June this year from 23,344,400 cubic metres during the same period of 2016. — ONA
