A need to boost handicrafts industries

By Abdulaziz Al Jahdhami — Technology and the reluctance of youths to take up traditional professions are taking a toll on handicrafts. The government bodies are leaving no stone unturned to preserve the Sultanate rich tradition and protect historic properties.

Almost every part of the country is being distinguished by handicrafts. Both men and women are engaged in this field as some have inherited the passion and skills from their ancestors.

It is highly commendable that some families are even passing this tradition to their children and grandchildren. What they transfer is not just some skills but also culture and history. Mahatma Gandhi said: “The object of basic education is the physical, intellectual and moral development of children through the medium of handicraft”. Therefore, handicrafts should be the basic of education. Young boys and girls should be taught to use their hands to make something of value.

It is inspiring to see young Omanis are getting involved in the handicrafts. Lots of youth are having their own business in making or trading different types of handicrafts. Out of their interest and passion, they believe in the importance of such traditions and they opt to make their living out of handicrafts. Not only in the interior parts of the countries, but even in the capital, where the cost of living is high, people are relying on handicrafts to make their living. They believe in their skills and potential so they could make their dreams happen!

Accordingly, everyone one of us, either corporate or individuals, should support men and women who are in handicrafts sector. As part of their social corporate responsibility, companies should promote and buy handcrafted gift items. We, as individuals, should also support the handicrafts by purchasing such products. Such traditional gifts reflect the Omani culture and heritage.
