Music stars celebrate International Jazz Day

Music stars from around the world are celebrating International Jazz Day in style at a concert hall in Havana on Sunday. Among the all-star cast at the Gran Teatro Alicia Alonso are US musiciand Herbie Hancock, Cuba’s Chucho Valdes, French guitarist Marc Antoine and South Korean singer Youn Sun Nah.


Their performances are slated to include jazz favourites and new songs.


This year jazz history and education programmes were also provided for tens of thousands of students in over 11,000 schools across Cuba,organizers UNESCO said in a statement.


“This year’s focus on Cuba is testament to the power of jazz to build bridges and join women and men together around shared values and aspirations,” said Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO.


The Cuban capital is renowned for the descarga music style, known fora mix between a classic jazz jam session and traditional Cuban music themes such as son or guaracha.


Sunday marks the sixth International Jazz Day since 2012, and involved concert, lectures and films on the music style worldwide.Washington hosted last year’s main event. — dpa
