The average one-way commuting time is lowest in Muscat among the Asian cities at 17.12 minutes, followed by Limassol (Cyprus) at 17.14 minutes. In the GCC, Abu Dhabi comes second with 29 minutes, Doha 34.49, Dubai 37.58, Riyadh 38.38 and Jeddah 38.7, as per the time index of Numbeo.com, which offers one of the largest database of user-contributed data about cities and countries worldwide.

At 57.23 minutes, Sharjah is the worst performing city in the GCC.

Muscat’s overall ranking has been attributed to the fact that the main mode transportation in Oman is private car (80.95 users), compared with other cities which depend more on public transport, including buses.

The overall travel time to school for children in Muscat is 17.12 minutes for an average distance of 20.18 km.

Oman’s capital also scores highly in the pollution index, an estimation of the overall pollution in the city. More weight has been given to air pollution than water pollution/accessibility, two main pollution factors.

Muscat (47.14) scores over Abu Dhabi (49.56), Dubai (53.84), Riyadh (71.36), Doha (71.38) and Jeddah (78.82).

Muscat has been rated by the survey respondents for air quality, drinking water quality, garbage disposal and the quality of parks.

Numbeo offers real-time information on living conditions, including cost of living, housing indicators, healthcare, traffic, crime and pollution.

While the pollution index is an estimation of the overall pollution in the city, the traffic index is a composite index of time consumed in traffic due to job

commute, estimation of time

consumption dissatisfaction, CO2 consumption estimation in traffic and overall inefficiencies in the traffic system.

According to Numbeo, the dissatisfaction of commute times increases exponentially with each minute if one-way commute time is longer than 25 minutes.
