MUSCAT: The Intellectual Property Department in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry has begun to train Omani examiners in the field of patents. This move comes within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry at the Patent Office with the Egyptian Academy of Scientific Research and Technology. Ali bin Hamad al Maamari, Head of the Industrial Property Department, said that the training aims to qualify the Omani staff to be able to examine patents in the Sultanate, the exchange of experiences between the two sides, in addition to training Omani examiners on the formalities review of the patent, the International Patent Classification (IPC) and the patentability examination. He added that the Egyptian Patent Office at the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, which was chosen, is the only approved Arab office by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as an examination and international research office. He further said that the office has a long experience in this field and has 140 qualified examiners in all areas. — ONA
