Mayors discuss urban planning of cities and sustainability

Mashhad: Muscat Municipality is currently taking part in the first conference of Islamic cities, which is held in the Iranian city of Mashhad from 25-27 April, with the participation of more than 50 mayors from different countries of the Islamic world.


Mohsin bin Mohammed al Shaikh, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, Head of the participating delegation, in his speech at the conference referred to the importance of the conference as a beginning of fruitful and constructive cooperation between different Islamic cities that are rich in its heritage and diverse civilisation.


This is in the light of globalisation and advancement in communications and technologies, which facilitate and enhance cooperation opportunities in various fields that are of interest to Islamic cities and their peoples.


Several meetings were held on the sidelines of the conference to discuss aspects of cooperation between the Municipality of Muscat and the cities of Mashhad, Isfahan, Tehran and the Lebanese city of Beirut, in fields related to urban planning of cities, sustainability of resources and finding suitable solutions to the challenges faced by cities of different sizes and locations.


Participants in the conference listened to some research papers that will contribute to finding common ground for cooperation between Islamic cities in the field of research, knowledge transfer and exchange of experiences.


The participating delegation comprises Dr Ibrahim bin Abdullah al Rahbi, Director-General Human Resources and Ahmed bin Mubarak al Balushi, Acting Director of Councils and Committees in Muscat Municipality.
