Warnings by authorities not to keep huge amounts of cash at home have gone unheeded by many. Such a mistake proved costly for an Asian woman who was robbed and held captive at her home in Barka. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) said an Asian national was arrested on charges of stealing RO 17,000 from the woman’s residence. She was also held captive by the accused.

He was arrested at Muscat International Airport when he was trying to leave the country. The stolen cash was recovered from him.

The accused was referred to the Public Prosecution for further legal action.

A source at the ROP said the police have been urging people not to keep huge amount of money at home due to lack of security and safety measures.

“People can do so (keep more cash) if they have proper means to safeguard their belongings. A proper locker should be installed at homes for keeping huge amounts of cash and important documents,” said the source.

He said people can also keep their cash in banks, which is a safe place.

The issue was discussed on social media, with many saying the crime rate increased during vacations, especially summer.

Earlier, the ROP had urged both citizens and residents to take necessary precautions to prevent thefts. “House owners should make sure their doors are properly locked. Consider installing cameras to prevent crimes and help catch thieves,” it said.

It asked them to remain cautious.

The alert came after a national was arrested in the Wilayat of Saham for stealing cash and jewellery worth RO 20,000 from five houses.

The police asked the public to take all safety measures, including installation of surveillance cameras, burglar alarms and lockers.
