By Kabeer Yousuf — MUSCAT: May 15 - A total of 741 men and 618 women above 60 years of age from Oman will perform Haj this year, according to the Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs. They were selected through a digital draw. A total of 2,056 men and 2,130 women in the age group 45 to 60 years were selected through the draw held at the ministry. “We have given priority to the elderly as well as first-timers,” said Hamoud al Amri, Deputy Head of the Haj Department. A total of 3,209 men in the age group 30 to 45, constituting 24.6 per cent of the total number of pilgrims, and 2,957 women representing 22.7 per cent will make it to the holy lands from Oman this year.

The pilgrims performing Haj this year also include 780 males and 564 females in the age group 18 to 30 years. The ministry had earlier asked all applicants to choose contractors from among the 61 who have been approved by the authorities. “All pilgrims are requested to confirm if their contractor is legally approved by the ministry in order to avoid future complications.”

“A pilgrim can change his contractor even after he is selected, but it should be made in the first 48 hours after the announcement of names. After 48 hours, they have to send an e-request to the ministry,” Al Amry added. The total number of Haj pilgrims from Oman this year is 14,000, including 12,664 Omanis and 600 expatriates. The remaining 736 constitute the official Haj delegation. The approved charges for Haj by air starts from RO 1,250 to RO 3,800. A two-way trip by road costs between RO 550 and RO 1,700.
