Obesity and being overweight are problems that plague many people from around the world today. This problem has not skipped the Gulf region and Oman in particular as more and more people who live sedentary lifestyle are seen packing unhealthy weight.

There are many disadvantages and health issues that come along with being overweight and obese. Some of them are diabetes, the high-tendency of becoming stressed and other chronic diseases that are a threat to a large number of Oman’s population.

Noticeable among young people in Oman today are the widespread preference of undergoing gastric stomalogy or gastric bypass surgery, a medical procedure that is viewed as the faster way of curbing appetite.

Gastric stomatology is one of the latest ways doctors have come to deal with the global obesity problem and due to a number of successes, has been hailed as an effective way to reduce weight. But the surgeries are not without a hitch. Despite the successes, there are also many reported failures — operations being stopped because there are unforeseen side effects and even a number of deaths were reported.

The kind obesity we are dealing with is linked to being extremely overweight and unhealthy, which can be treated with exercise and a healthier diet. If the patient is unsuccessful with these changes, their other option is surgery. There are more than one kind of these surgeries available to patients, the most popular one in Muscat now is one that quantifies the stomach. This helps patients to gain back normalcy in their lives, change their lifestyles and help their mental health along with their physical. This surgery had helped patients with various weight related diseases. Studies show that it reduces diabetes by 80%, 70% of blood pressure issues, 90% of respiratory diseases along with many other health issues. These operations have been carried out for over 30 years, reducing the risk of obesity.

These operations have been carried out for more than 30 years to reduce the risk of obesity. Studies show that the number of these operations done in the Middle East, specifically in the Gulf has increased in the last 10 years and has become of the most popular surgeries people have been getting done. Recently, it has become common to find people who have had this surgery done without existing weight issues and in a way to keep their body’s thin. Many have commented about the behaviours of some of these health professionals and their exploitation of peoples desires to stay thin attainting to existing beauty standards.

One patient, who had a gastric bypass surgery, female aged 32, confirmed that the surgery was successful at all levels. “My weight was 120 kilograms and I lost in 3 months more than 25 kilograms. I lost a large proportion of weight, and I noticed the disappearance of many of the symptoms that I was suffering from before with the descent of fat. I was upset before surgery that I can’t walk for 100 meters, but now I’m walking more than 2 kilometres I did not get tired easily. Now I can sleep for a long time without interrupting what makes me feel very comfortable, in addition to not suffering from the weight of joints and others.”

While Adel, another person who had the surgery done; pre-surgery weighed 150 kg. He said “This process is one of the best processes for treatment of obesity. Although He suffered at the beginning due to losing weight but pointing out that he was suffering of breath problems, and many diseases but now he is at about 87 kg and he hope to continue losing weight and remain healthy.

Alkumi, a female aged 29 year who had the surgery done and now weights 45 kg, and before she was 72 kg highlighted with trust that she was dreaming of having such perfect and slim body! She said; “ Many people advised me to not do the surgery but I decided to do it and I am happy with the result. “

A woman with two daughters whose ages are 21 and 24 said “ I have done the operation and I am happy now as I can wear whatever I like. I take my daughters too and they did the surgery too. I think now they will be happy and one day they will thank me to encourage them to take the correct decision. “

Another patient aged 33 and weight now 53 said “ I am happy with my weight now. Before few months I was about 74 kgm and it was nightmares for me. Now I feel self-confidant more with my friends. I am planning to lose more kilograms in the coming months.”

Gastric stomatology is not popular amongst those that are in urgent need to reduced their weight but for many it had become a choice for vanity in an attempt to achieve their idealistic body type. It is truly hard to come to the conclusion, are people going into surgery to improve their health? Or has it become another cosmetic surgery to help people fit into their body ideals?
