Muscat, July 23 -

A gas leak in Al Mouj, a waterfront community, in Seeb sparked panic on Sunday, prompting the management to quickly alert the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulances (PACDA).

A top official at PACDA said a “panic call” was received from Al Mouj saying there was a gas leak and smoke was billowing out of a meeting hall where labourers were involved in some work.

The PACDA team rushed to the spot and traced the origin of the leak to a damaged air-conditioner. “We contained the methane gas leak within a few hours and brought the situation under control,” he added.

The team lauded the Al Mouj management for “prompt action, which prevented any untoward incidents”.

“In cases like these, alerting the authorities quickly helps mitigate damage to both life and property,” the official said.

In the event of a leak in LPG or LNG cylinder, a security valve should be provided for automatically shutting off gas supply through the pipe, said Abdullah bin Khalifa al Khadhuri, Community Engagement Manager and Senior Fire Safety Trainer at the International College of Engineering management (ICEM).

“Gas leak detector and shut-off valve are key measures for safeguarding people and property in case of LPG or LNG leakage,” he said.

“Besides ensuring original devices and appliances are used, carry out regular maintenance of the gas supply network and pipes,” he added.
