Four SQU academics win Venus Foundation Awards

MUSCAT: Four academics from Sultan Qaboos University have won awards in different categories of excellence in research instituted by Venus International Foundation, Chennai, India. The awards were presented during the Venus International Foundation Annual Awards Meet held in Chennai, India on December 3. Prof Sabah Ahmed Abdul-Wahab al Suleiman from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and Prof Khalifa al Jabri from the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University have been awarded by the Venus International Foundation, Chennai, India for year 2016 in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.


Prof Sabah has been selected for the “Lifetime Achievement Award” for her contribution in the field of Environmental Engineering whereas Prof Khalifa has been chosen for the “Distinguished Scientist Award” for his contribution in the field of Structural Engineering.


Prof Sabah has excelled in all areas that are important in academia, teaching, research and service. The number and quality of her publications would place her in a top position as a scholar of tremendous impact. She has published more than 160 referred international journal articles and around 11 chapters in books. She is Editor- in- Chief of the book that was published by the international publishing institution (Springer). This book is about sick building syndrome in public buildings and workplaces. In addition, she has presented more than 60 scientific research papers at various distinguished international conferences.


Prof  Khalifa al Jabri is currently the Head of Civil and Architectural Engineering Department.   He has over 160 scientific papers in the field of structural engineering and construction materials.  He made distinct scientific contributions mainly in the study of the behaviour of steel structures under high temperatures, seismic hazard risk assessment for Oman and use of industrial wastes and by-products as a construction.   Prof Al Jabri has also received the best researcher’s award from Sultan Qaboos University in 2015 and he was elected as fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), UK, which is the highest rank that can be obtained by a practitioner to the engineering profession in the world.


Dr M Mohammed Essa, Associate Professor in Human Nutrition, Department of Food Science & Nutrition, College of Agricultural & Marine Sciences at SQU, has won the award for “Outstanding Scientist” for his contributions and achievements in the field of nutritional neuroscience. Dr Essa is the editor-in-chief for International Journal of Nutrition, Pharmacology, Neurological Diseases published by Wolters & Kluwer, USA and is involved in the editorial board of various well-known journals such as Frontiers in Neuroscience, Biochemie, PLOS one. He is an expert in the field of Nutritional Neuroscience and published 100 papers, 32 book chapters and several books. Dr Essa’s research work received the National Research Award 2015 under health sector by The Research Council of Oman.


Ms Frincy Francis, Lecturer, Department of Maternity and Child Health Nursing, College of Nursing at SQU bagged the aspiring “Young Scientist” award by the Centre for Advanced Research and Design (Research wing of Venus International Foundation, India) at the Annual Research Meet 2016. She has been a winner of the prestigious Dr Umberto Veronesi Foundation Award for the best research poster on Breast Cancer in October 2014 at the EURAMA Congress. She is a peer reviewer for over four international journals.


The organizers recognized Frincy’s contributions in research and extension services in her field within a short professional tenure.


The aim of the event was to acknowledge and recognize efforts of research enthusiasts based on their professional experience to motivate and promote a research culture by creating networks between researchers of varied science and education fields. Venus International Foundation, based in Chennai, India is a global network foundation seeks to enhance the academic systems for teaching and research.
