Fidget spinner, which had created quite a stir at schools and offices, has now come in different shapes, sizes and colours. Although quite dissimilar to its original version, the ‘new avatar’ has been effective in wooing the children.

The small spin wheel was a craze in the offices and schools.

Authorities had banned the fidget spinner at schools because they were found to be a source of distraction for children from studies.

They are available in different sizes and colours, though prices don’t vary much.

Those dealing with these gadgets are doing “good business”, say reports.

These spinning wheels, which cost anything between 500 baisa and RO 10, were originally created to develop the fine motor skills in autistic children and those with special needs.

Besides enhancing the concentration and arithmetic skills of such kids, it can be a stress-buster for stressed-out workers, according to child counsellors.

“In some cases, parents of kids with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) or SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) have been advised to get a fidget spinner for their children so they can keep themselves busy,” said the head of a special school.

It has also been recommended for some mentally retarded children who get violent at times. “These spinners can prove to be a tranquiliser,” he said.

Many children have been found busy spinning the gadget oblivious of their surroundings.

Schools have banned them in their campuses as they have been found to be “detrimental to the natural intellectual growth of the children”.

Shameer P T K, a social worker, feels kids are getting addicted to a new habit which is not good. “Chances are they can get diverted from moral values and studies.”

Some organisations have issued circulars banning employees from using fidget spinners during office hours.

On the other hand, a fidget spinner can be a handy tool to help improve concentration, said a student counsellor in a large school. “At the same time, it can prove harmful as chances of fast-rotating spinners slipping out of control and falling on others or delicate objects might result in danger or damage.”

According to experts, fidget spinners can help improve concentration and reduce stress through a smooth, fast, satisfying silent rotation in the hand.

Some musicians are said to be using the device ahead of a performance to improve their motor skills.
