CISM World Football Cup 2017 launched

The trophy and mascot for the January 15 to 28, 2017 tournament was unveiled at a spectacular event in Muscat


By Staff Reporter — MUSCAT: Dec. 13: Oman launched the second edition of CISM World Football Cup 2017 at a spectacular ceremony in Muscat on Tuesday. During the ceremony at the Al Shafaq Club, the tournament trophy and mascot were unveiled. The event was held under the auspices of Lieutenant General Ahmed bin Harith al Nabhani, Chief of Staff of the Sultan’s Armed Forces. The tournament will be held from January 15 to 28, 2017. BeIn sports channel analyst and former Kuwaiti player Saad al Houti was the star attraction at the event along with other ambassadors for the championship.


Star Oman goalkeeper Ali al Habsi had sent a video message on the occasion, which was displayed during the video presentation at the event. Top Omani sports stars were also included in the presentation.


International Military Sports Council (CISM) Chairman Colonel Abdul Hakim bin Mohammed al Shannu, other CISM delegates from various countries were present on the occasion.


The main match venues will be the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex, where the opening as well as the final match will be played, the ROP Stadium in Al Wattayah and Seeb Sports Stadium.


The Royal Court Affairs Stadium and the Royal Guard of Oman Stadium will be utilised for the training sessions of the teams.


In the tournament, the participating teams will be divided into four groups with Oman placed in Group A along with Bahrain, France and Guinea. Algeria, Iran, Germany and Brazil will be in Group B, while Group C will comprise Qatar, Ireland, USA and Mali. Egypt, Syria, Poland and Canada will play in Group D.


Oman had won the CISM Asia Cup qualifying tournament in 2013, which was held in the Sultanate. The team came second at the first CISM Military World Cup in Azerbaijan in 2013.


The teams qualified for the finals of the second CISM World Football Cup 2017 in Oman are: 1. Oman, 2. Ireland, 3. Iran, 4. Syria, 5. Bahrain, 6. Qatar, 7. USA, 8. Canada, 9. DPR Korea, 10. Algeria, 11. Egypt, 12. Mali, 13. Guinea, 14. France, 15. Germany and 16. Poland.
