MUSCAT: Dr Safana bint Salim al Sa’eediyah (pictured), a chemical pathologist in the Ministry of Health (MOH), has achieved a breakthrough in the early prostate cancer diagnosis. Dr Safana, along with her team from MoH, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital and The Research Council, has succeeded in validating a new marker in diagnosing prostate cancer early. The marker is called -2 pro PSA. The research was conducted under the supervision of Dr Waad Allah Mula, Professor, Royal Hospital Clinical Biochemistry.

Unlike a conventional one, the new marker is more specific in diagnosing prostate cancer.

Through this test, a patient can be diagnosed early and provided treatment at a very early stage of cancer.

The test is expected to help reduce unnecessary prostate biopsies.

Therefore, the waiting list for prostate biopsy procedure would come down and include only those who really need it based on the result of the new marker.

The study included 200 patients from the Urology Department of two teaching hospitals in Muscat.

The Royal College of Pathologist has found this new study “very promising”. Results of the study will be announced at the Biomarkers Congress in Osaka, Japan, which will be held from August 7 to 9.
