SuHAR: Al Batinah International School (ABIS) Grade 7 students were given the opportunity of exploring Oman by the traditional means of transport, the camel.

From atop of the camel, students can really take in the beauty of Oman as they travel for 5 days along wadis and through mountains experiencing travel and life in the traditional way.

The trip started slowly with the students getting acquainted with their camels and drivers before undertaking a 6-8 km trek along the Wadi starting near the village of Al Khan.

From there they headed off in the direction of Al Thuqbah where they camped in the mountains by a beautiful water hole. Apart from swimming and mountain climbing, students also get to see Omani farms and aflaj systems at work. At night, the students got to experience the camaraderie of the camel drivers as they sing and dance around the camp fire. Finally, students were transported to the “Lost Dunes” of Buraimi to have some fun sand boarding and playing in the sand dunes.

This trip offered an amazing experience for students as they saw and travelled through Oman in the way the Bedouin have done for centuries. Apart from the bonding experiences of meeting the challenges of camping, making fires, cooking and cleaning up, they get to see first-hand the special relationship between the camel drivers and their camels. Most of the students also has a favourite camel with whom they shared a close bond.
