A waste of energy

minus
plus

By Sayeh Woodman — This week is about saving energy and costs. Take a look at some tips and see if you can make some utility savings…, which means more money for those savings, or go on then — treat yourself to a holiday!  They may be simple and obvious, but we still don’t do it!

SWITCH OFF STANDBY

You can save money just by turning your appliances off from standby mode. Almost all electrical appliances can be turned off at the plug without affecting their programming.   You could get a standby saver, which allows you to turn all your appliances off standby in one go.  It’s an energy saving tip that we all don’t pay attention too.

Check the instructions for any appliances you aren’t sure about.  Some satellite and digital TV recorders may need to be left plugged in so they can keep track of any programmes you want to record.

SWITCH TO LEDS

You can now get led spotlights that are bright enough to replace halogens, as well as regular energy saving bulbs.  They come in a variety of shapes, sizes and fittings if the average household replaced all of their remaining old-fashioned bulbs with the bulbs and all of their halogens with leds.

GET A HEAD

If you’ve got a shower that takes hot water straight from your hot water tank rather than an electric shower, this will reduce your hot water usage while retaining the sensation of a powerful shower, and save on your water heating.

Try to switch off your AC units as often as you can.  No need to have them blasting away day in, day out.  For the opposite effect when it gets to those hot months get a fan in. Don’t keep the AC units pumping and running.

TURN OFF LIGHTS

This sounds simply but it’s usually the very basic act we forget. Turn your lights off when you’re not using them.  If you switch a light off for just a few seconds, you will save more energy than it takes for the light to start up again, regardless of the type of light.

SPEND LESS TIME IN SHOWER

You can still be clean without spending a lot of wasted time on the shower. Being strategic of how you do your shower time — one minute less in the shower each day will save you money from your emergency and water bills.

CAREFUL IN YOUR KITCHEN

Yes a bowl to wash up rather than a running tap. It wouldn’t hurt to adapt some sensible ways of the good old days where a basin of water would last you an afternoon and evening’s wash.  As a tip, only fill the kettle with the amount of water that you need.  Cut back your washing, your machine should be used just one cycle per week to save on energy and cost.

I hope these little tips will help your purse or wallet and more importantly help to save energy.
