After the expatriate nurses, it is the doctors who would be replaced by their Omani counterparts.

About 80 senior expatriate doctors will be replaced by qualified Omani doctors this year, an official source has confirmed.

These Omani doctors have cleared the necessary exams and are awaiting placements, said a senior official.

“At least 120 local dentists are awaiting Ministry of Health’s placement and an equal number of specialists in other streams,” the source told the Observer.

“We are fully aware of the loss to these expatriate professionals with a number of years of experience, but we are left with no choice since the local people have to be employed.”

A senior official had earlier said 415 foreign nurses would be replaced by Omani paramedics in an attempt to accommodate the local workforce.

More than 500 expatriate nurses were retrenched last year, it is learnt.

“There will be similar measures in future as part of hiring more Omani medical and paramedical staff in the country’s health sector,” the official added.

There have been calls for employing local graduates who have been waiting for more than a year.
