71pc khareef visitors are Omanis

MUSCAT: Omanis accounted for 71.3 per cent of the total number of khareef visitors as against 70.5 per cent in the same period in 2016, according to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).


NCSI, which began the survey of visitors on June 21, will conclude it on Thursday. The survey included all visitors to Salalah by land and air.


Country-wise statistics as on September 19 shows citizens and residents of Gulf states, including Oman, accounted for 98.7 per cent of the total number of visitors compared with 0.5 per cent from Asian countries and 0.5 per cent from other Arab nations.


The total number of visitors stood at 301,991 as on August 1.


Implemented for the fourteenth successive year in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Royal Oman Police (ROP), the survey is aimed at identifying the size of domestic/foreign tourism during the khareef season. It will also identify the growth rates, the demographic and economic characteristics of visitors, besides specifications of the tourism journeys. Khareef Salalah Survey 2016 had indicated the total number of visitors stood at 652,986 compared with 514,777 in 2015, a 26.8 per cent jump.
